Constructing Parental Team Spirit

In a micro-analysis of two cases from the Netherlands, Instant Messaging conversations between birth parents and professional foster parents were studied. The study reveals there are three types of activity in Instant Messaging: aligning dialogues, exhchange of information, and relationship building. Aligning dialogues are the most common. These are aimed at coordinating (daily) matters around the youngster’s situation. Following aligning initiations, the conversations may change into the two other activity types: (background) exchange of information and relationship building. extenuating educational access challenges a specific foster youth and her advocate experienced as result of the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures.

Combining different activities in family-style group care

This research focuses on dinner conversations in family-style group care. Children, who cannot live with their biological families anymore, are given shelter in these family-style group care settings. For the development of an attachment relationship between children and their Professional Foster Parents (PFPs), it is important that the children feel that they are listened to in order to get an affective and intimate relationship with the parents. In this conversation-analytic research we analysed PFPs’ involvement in multiple activities simultaneously, namely listening and eating, which is referred to as ‘multi-activity’. The analyses have shown systematic ways in which PFPs coordinate their involvement in the activities of ‘doing’ listening and eating, which are (i) when parents avert their gaze from the telling child, they break the social rule which states that hearers need to look at speakers during the telling. We found that when averting their gaze, PFPs do head nods and linguistic means or positioning their bodies in the direction of the telling child. This research contributes to knowledge about interaction between adolescents and PFPs. It further contributes to knowledge about how human beings are able to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously. This is the accepted version (post-print) of the article.

Bouwstenen als kompas

In dit artikel wordt verslag gedaan van een onderzoek naar de opvattingen over praktijkgericht onderzoek van lectoren van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede (CHE) die als gezamenlijk onderzoeksprofiel hebben gekozen voor de kracht van relaties. In focusgroepen met maximaal drie lectoren is besproken welk type relaties bestudeerd worden, met welke methoden van onderzoek wordt gewerkt en hoe relationeel de onderzoekers zelf te werk gaan. De uitkomsten van de focusgroepen zijn voorgelegd aan de directeur onderzoek en besproken met alle lectoren samen. Ook is internationale literatuur bestudeerd over de aard en kenmerken van praktijkgericht onderzoek. Dit heeft geleid tot een vijftal bouwstenen die samen de visie op CHE lectoraatsonderzoek vormen. Onderzoek aan de CHE is: gericht op het begrijpen van praktijken, vanuit een abductieve redeneerwijze, vanuit een relationele werkwijze, gericht op het verbeteren van praktijk en op leren en reflectie. Hiermee is taal ontstaan waarmee lectoren onderling in gesprek kunnen komen over de aard van hun onderzoek, elkaar waar nodig op blinde vlekken kunnen wijzen, maar waarmee zij vooral steeds terug kunnen keren naar de kern van hun werk . Het type gesprek dat in de ontwikkeling van praktijkgericht onderzoek aan hogescholen een nadrukkelijke plek verdient.

Betere samenwerking tussen ouders en opvoeders door ‘relationele route’

Een goede relatie en goede samenwerking tussen ouders en pleeg- en gezinshuisouders is goed voor de ontwikkeling van een pleegkind. Want ook na een uithuisplaatsing spelen ouders een onmisbare rol in het leven van hun kind. Maar samenwerken is soms ingewikkeld en de rol die ouders hebben in het leven van hun kind wordt vaak niet erkend. Sinds 2014 doet het lectoraat Jeugd en Gezin van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede onderzoek naar samenwerkingsrelaties tussen opvoeders en ouders. Ze ontwikkelden de methodiek ‘de relationele route tot gedeeld opvoederschap’. Daarmee wordt actief gewerkt aan het behouden van de plek van ouders in het leven en de opvoeding van een kind en aan de samenwerking tussen ouders en opvoeders. Tussen januari 2021 en juni 2022 werd de relationele route in de praktijk getest binnen pleegzorg bij Jeugdformaat en bij gezinshuizen van het Leger des Heils.

Attachment in interaction

Out-of-home placed children or adolescents can be placed in family-style group care, a promising alternative youth care setting. It provides children and Professional Foster Parents (PFPs) with the opportunity to create a continuous relationship. This relationship, in turn, is an important factor in building and maintaining attachment. Scientific literature shows that sensitivity and responsivity are crucial interactional elements for building and maintaining an attachment relationship, but little knowledge is available on how those concepts are displayed in mundane interactions. Therefore this dissertation studies dinner conversations between experienced PFPs and adolescents in family-style group care to find out how sensitivity and responsivity unfold in these conversations. The data consist of 300 hours of videorecordings coming from six family-style group care settings. The method of Conversation Analysis was used to analyse the conversations in detail. On the basis of four studies a better understanding is gained into how the dyadic concepts sensitivity and responsivity are displayed in daily interactions between PFPs and adolescents in family-style group care. The analysis of these specific phenomena disclose the PFPadolescent interaction from different perspectives: the verbal and non-verbal actions of both PFPs and adolescents and how PFPs and adolescents align. In short, this dissertation provides a detailed analysis of interaction and improves the understanding of the dyadic concepts sensitivity and responsivity. It reveals that adolescents are active participants in interactions and shows that PFPs are inventive in their conversations with the adolescents.

“Shared care” through instant messaging updates in youth care; an interaction analysis (Post-print)

In this paper we present an analysis of WhatsApp interactions in youth care. In family-style group care young people temporarily live in the family of professional foster parents (PFP), while they regularly visit their birth parents (BPs). Our data consist of instant messaging conversations between 11 pairs of PFPs and BPs during two months. Using Conversation Analysis (CA), we focused on the social interaction between BPs and PFPs, achieved in and through multi-modally constructed sequences of updates - responses. Updates are used by BPs in the context of the transfer from the child from/to the PFP to display responsibility towards the PFP and for the child. Also, PFPs use updates to provide BPs quasi primary access to the experiences of the child, centrally by sending images. Across these functions, we observe specific social actions of BPs and PFPs; while BPs work to display responsibility, PFPs subtly empower BPs as parents.

‘Centraal voor het kind’

Voor het programma ‘Versterken van de kracht van pleegouders’ hebben het Lectoraat Jeugd en Gezin van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede, Entrea Lindenhout, Jeugdbescherming Gelderland en Stichting Samen voor het kind (ouders en pleegouders die vanuit hun eigen ervaring willen helpen om ouders en pleegouders goed met elkaar te laten samenwerken) de handen ineen geslagen voor het project 'Samenwerken tussen ouders en pleegouders'. Het doel van deze samenwerking was om te verhelderen waar een goede samenwerking tussen pleegouders en ouders uit bestaat. In deze rapportage doen we verslag van deze zoektocht. We zullen eerst bespreken welke stappen zijn gezet, vervolgens bespreken we een lijst met werkzame elementen in de samenwerking tussen ouders en pleegouders, om deze vervolgens stuk voor stuk langs te lopen om te laten zien wat er in de literatuur over wordt gezegd en hoe deze elementen er in de praktijk uit zien.

Het andere verhaal; narratieve wegen in contextuele hulpverlening

Wordt het geen tijd dat je ruimte geeft aan het andere verhaal?” vroeg ze me, terwijl ze met een kopje thee weer de kamer in kwam, ergens in een vooroorlogse Amsterdamse wijk, drie hoog in een kamer vol met boeken. We hadden een supervisiegesprek en ik weet niet meer of de vraag precies zo gesteld was, maar zo is ze met me meegereisd. De vraag opende een perspectief naar het ándere verhaal, dat ondergesneeuwd lag onder neerslachtige gevoelens. De vraag bracht me weer in verbinding met constructieve acties en vertrouwensbronnen in mijn werk en context. Er sprak vertrouwen uit en hoop dat ik die andere weg kon gaan en het nodigde me uit om met andere ogen te kijken naar mijn ervaringen.
