Grondrechten.
PublicatieOpbrengstgericht of talentgericht werken?
PublicatieFuture Talk : Discussing hypothetical situations with prospective adoptive parents
The objective of this study is to contribute towards understandinghow welfare and justice discourses becomeapparent in institutional conversations where social workersinvolved in child protection have dual professional identities:that of helper and of gatekeeper. In this article weanalyse a specific conversational practice in a particular childprotection context: social workers asking questions abouthypothetical situations in interviews with prospectiveadoptive parents. We show the nature of these questions inface-to-face interactions between social workers andprospective adoptive parents. In addition, we also analysehow the social workers manage to integrate aspects oftesting the capabilities of the prospective adoptive parentswhile, at the same time, also helping them to become evenbetter prepared parents. Using the method of conversationanalysis makes it possible to analyse how the social workersare doing being a gatekeeper and/or helper withoutspelling that out.
PublicatieCompetencies in nursing students for organized forms of clinical moral deliberation and decision-making
Bachelor-prepared nurses are expected to be competent in moral deliberation and decision-making (MDD) in clinical practice. It is unclear, however, how this competence develops in nursing students. This study explores the development of nursing students’ competence for participating in organized forms of MDD in clinical practice, with an eye to improve nursing education. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted by a questionnaire among first and fourth year bachelor nursing students and two cohorts of novice nurses of one bachelor program in nursing. Items included the variables knowledge, attitude and skills in relation to the nurse as professional, to the nursing process, and to the organization. Data collection took place in March 2009. Across 179 respondents, scores in MDD knowledge and skills are significantly higher for students later in nursing education, especially with regard to the variable ‘nursing process’. Attitudes towards MDD score significantly higher after completing nursing training, but lower scores appeared for MDD knowledge and skills, particularly in relation to the organization. Results suggest nursing education should reinforce students’ attitudes to structural forms of MDD, and clinical practice should reinforce nurses’ MDD knowledge and skills. Both education and practice should reinforce nurses’ MDD competence in relation to the organization.
PublicatieHow social workers start to assess the suitability of prospective adoptive parents
This article takes a close look at the openings of 12 different Dutch adoption assessment sessions. Inthe first of a series of 4 adoption assessment sessions, social workers perform different actions that areanalyzed in detail. The overall focus is on how contact and relationships are established in the openings, and how the social workers work toward the first topic. We found that adoption assessment is anon-self-evident occasion, and this is due to the potential risk of a negative assessment being made—itis oriented to as a delicate setting. In the openings, social workers take time to explain and justify theneed for assessment and construct a relationship in which they claim entitlement to conduct an assessment, while also stressing cooperation with the prospective adoptive parent(s).
