Assessing candidates for adoptive parenthood
Prospective adoptive parents who take part in a Dutch adoption assessment procedure are asked to writedown their life stories. In this article we examine how information from the life stories is deleted, selectedand transformed into a topic to talk about in an assessment interview and/or to write about in arecommendation record. We have shown in a detailed analysis how prospective adoptive parentsdemonstrate themselves to be “normal people” with “normal childhoods” and how life events are selectedfrom the life stories as a means to assess the coping qualities of the prospective adoptive parents. We couldconclude that social workers in the recommendation record: 1) turn statements made by the parents intofacts; 2) leave statements in the parents' own words, and that they 3) assess suspicions of possible risk factorsin the interview but omit them from the record. By using conversation analysis as a method we could gain aninsight into the dynamics of assessment, making visible exactly how social workers collect information aboutpeople's background to arrive at a decision about whether the candidates are suitable adoptive parents.

Dat, omgekeerd, maatschappelijk bevlogen vernieuwers baat zouden kunnen hebben bij geestelijke verzorging, zal voor velen een nieuw idee zijn. De auteurs van dit artikel opperen dit idee en staven het met resultaten uit hun onderzoeksproject.

Sustainable human resource management (HRM) advocates a shift toward pluralism, emphasizing the legitimacy of multiple stakeholder interests, voices, and meanings. Intended dialogue is often promoted as a key practice to support this shift. However, how intended dialogue actually contributes to pluralism remains under-theorized. Moreover, dialogue is frequently idealized as a route to harmony or ‘common ground,’ which can obscure power dynamics, silence dissent, and suppress difference. Building on dialogical ethics and framing theory, this conceptual paper introduces the intended dialogical responsibility (IDR) model, which reconceptualizes intended dialogue not as consensus-seeking but as a reflective space for exploring irreducible differences. Drawing on dialogue theorists such as Buber, Levinas, and Bakhtin, dialogical responsibility is proposed as an ethical form of ‘thirdness’—a mediating presence in the leader–worker dyad that invites participants to remain open to the other, question their own frames, and attend to asymmetries in voice and power. To support this stance, the IDR model employs framing theory to distinguish between micro-level situated frames (e.g., issue and relationship frames), meso-level strategic frames, and macro-level institutional frames. Dialogue is thus understood as a dynamic, ongoing, and reflexive process—occurring within and beyond episodic conversations—where meanings are co-constructed and contested over time. This paper contributes to sustainable HRM literature by offering a multilevel theoretical model and sensitizing questions to support ethically responsive dialogue. It provides a conceptual foundation for navigating pluralism and fostering dialogical spaces in complex organizational contexts.

Ik heb dit boek met vaart en aandacht gelezen. Met vaart, omdat het boek goed is geschreven en uitnodigt om door te lezen. Met aandacht, omdat Elize Lam tot belangrijke bevindingen komt die ze goed onderbouwt en die ze dichtbij brengt. Als lezer raak je op een aangename manier betrokken.

This book is the newest addition to the Routledge series ‘Directions in Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis’, which is dedicated to publishing the latest work on the study of human conduct and aptitudes, the (re)production of social orderliness and the methods and aspirations of the social sciences. Keel’s contribution fits perfectly with this aim, analysing interactions between parents and (young) children in the light of socialization theory.

In dit artikel wordt verslag gedaan van een onderzoek naar de opvattingen over praktijkgericht onderzoek van lectoren van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede (CHE) die als gezamenlijk onderzoeksprofiel hebben gekozen voor de kracht van relaties. In focusgroepen met maximaal drie lectoren is besproken welk type relaties bestudeerd worden, met welke methoden van onderzoek wordt gewerkt en hoe relationeel de onderzoekers zelf te werk gaan. De uitkomsten van de focusgroepen zijn voorgelegd aan de directeur onderzoek en besproken met alle lectoren samen. Ook is internationale literatuur bestudeerd over de aard en kenmerken van praktijkgericht onderzoek. Dit heeft geleid tot een vijftal bouwstenen die samen de visie op CHE lectoraatsonderzoek vormen. Onderzoek aan de CHE is: gericht op het begrijpen van praktijken, vanuit een abductieve redeneerwijze, vanuit een relationele werkwijze, gericht op het verbeteren van praktijk en op leren en reflectie. Hiermee is taal ontstaan waarmee lectoren onderling in gesprek kunnen komen over de aard van hun onderzoek, elkaar waar nodig op blinde vlekken kunnen wijzen, maar waarmee zij vooral steeds terug kunnen keren naar de kern van hun werk . Het type gesprek dat in de ontwikkeling van praktijkgericht onderzoek aan hogescholen een nadrukkelijke plek verdient.

Foster children often encounter worldview differences between their foster family and their birth family, for example, when participating in religious activities and practices. Foster children not only have a right to continuity in upbringing but also consistency in worldview, culture and language. Good co-parenting relationships are important for their identity development. For these reasons, foster care workers are entrusted with the task of supporting the triadic relationship of the foster child, birth parents and foster parents in dealing with worldview differences. Based on in-depth interviews with foster care workers (n = 16) six skills in dealing with worldview differences can be distinguished: (1) basic knowledge of worldviews and identity formation; (2) empathizing with the other; (3) inquisitiveness to discover what is essential for the other; (4) initiating worldview conversations and keeping them going; (5) fostering self-reflection in worldview; and (6) manoeuvring between and monitoring all interests. It is helpful if birth parents are well-informed in advance about the impact of worldview differences and if foster care workers and foster parents are aware of the identity and developmental needs of foster children to explore the worldview of the foster family and the birth family.

Beton is een bouwmateriaal dat is samengesteld uit met name cement, water en zand, grind en/of steenslag. Zand en grind worden wereldwijd schaarser en mogen over enkele jaren niet meer in Nederland gewonnen worden. Betonfabrikanten zoeken om deze redenen naar hoogwaardige, gecertificeerde en gerecyclede alternatieven hiervoor. Meer dan de helft van de boerenbedrijven moet stoppen of krimpen vanwege de stikstofaanpak en andere regels en beleidsdoelen. Daardoor zal de komende jaren naar verwachting een fors aantal boeren stoppen met het houden van dieren en ontstaat in Regio Foodvalley een enorme oppervlakte aan vrijkomende agrarische bebouwing (VAB). Betonpuin uit de sloop van VAB wordt door betonfabrikanten gezien als een alternatieve grondstofstroom voor de betonproductie. De CHE heeft, samen met Bosch Beton en Living Lab Regio Foodvalley Circulair, een subsidie ontvangen om van 1 september 2023 tot 31 augustus 2024 onderzoek te doen naar een circulaire betonketen uit VAB. Er ligt, vanuit het Betonakkoord, een opgave bij Regio Foodvalley om de transitie naar 100% hoogwaardig hergebruik van betonafval in 2030 te maken. Het ontbreekt op dit moment aan handelingsperspectief om de beoogde transitie richting een circulaire betonketen te realiseren. In de eindrapportage van het onderzoek zijn de belangrijkste knelpunten opgesomd en zijn oplossingsrichtingen weergegeven. Om de slag naar een circulaire betonketen in Regio Foodvalley te maken is gezamenlijke inspanning nodig. Het markttransformatie model van Simons en Nijhof (2021) biedt houvast om te komen tot de eindfase van volwassenheid waarbij circulair slopen en hoogwaardig gebruik van betongranulaat in de regio de norm is.
