PublicatieParents’ decision to use e-consults in preventive youth health care
Using digital health interventions in prevention programs for families with young children is often optional for parents. In preventive youth health care, nurses routinely discuss availability and suitability of this option with parents. It remains unknown what drives parental decision-making and which factors influence the decision regarding use of e-consults. This study aimed to identify which nurse and parent factors are related to the parents’ decision. Data of 718 parents and 41 nurses were collected. It turned out that the option e-consult was not discussed with 206 parents. Generalized linear mixed model analyses showed that nurses with 0–3 years working experience discussed optional e-consults significantly more often with parents. Most parents (66.4%) decided to use e-consults. Parents were less likely to use e-consults when nurses had 3–6 years of working experience and a high self-reported level for ‘Collaborator’. E-consults have been in place for over 3 years, likely making them an integral part of routine care and fostering greater nurse confidence for nurses with 0–3 years of working experience. Implementation efforts should primarily focus on nurse adoption rather than parental uptake. The findings stress the value of considering the perspectives of nurses and parents when implementing person-centered digital health interventions.
PublicatieCross-bearing in Early Christianity
Ruben van Wingerden investigates how the motif of bearing one's cross was interpreted in early Christianity up to the third century. First, he analyses the New Testament tradition: Mark and Matthew link cross-bearing with the readiness to die under persecution, while Luke tones down associations with physical death, presenting it as renunciation of possessions. John omits Simon of Cyrene and stresses Jesus' self-sufficiency in laying down his life. Simon himself is read against the background of the Greco-Roman motif of the noble death, where the innocent philosopher maintains his dignity.Secondly, the author traces subsequent interpretations by early Christian authors. Writers such as Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Cyprian, Novatian, and Origen developed a range of perspectives, from metaphorical to martyrological. A recurring insight is that cross-bearing was understood as readiness for martyrdom, never as a literal invitation to crucifixion. Origen marks the first instance in which Simon of Cyrene is linked to discipleship. Strikingly, Luke 9:23 with its »daily« addition disappears in these sources, reflecting a context where persecution required emphasis on immediate readiness for death rather than daily discipline. Moreover, sayings from Matthew and Luke often appear as blended formulae, indicating a flexible textual tradition. By situating these interpretations within Jewish, Roman, and philosophical frameworks, Ruben van Wingerden shows how early Christian readers reshaped the motif into a complex tradition that intertwined physical martyrdom with spiritual death to possessions, passions, and family ties.
PublicatieThe Prodigal Discipline
This article explores the connection between theological ideas and the realist school in international relations (IR), arguing that realism is indebted to theological thinking in its origins and application. Drawing on the tradition of Christian realism, it shows how core theological concepts have shaped classical realism and neorealism, though often in secularized forms. This process of secularization, however, has also led to the impoverishment of these IR theories. Using Reinhold Niebuhr’s concept of irony as a case in point, the article suggests that alternative forms of secularization remain possible—ones that retain theological depth without requiring confessional commitments. The article illustrates these theoretical insights by historically examining the role of theological ideas in concrete political developments, such as the onset of the Cold War and the early postwar European security situation. It concludes by arguing for renewed theological engagement given the continued and pervasive presence of religion in global politics.
PublicatieThe effectiveness of an adapted modular CBT training for youth with depressive symptoms: a study protocol for an n-of-1 trial
Background The prevalence of depressive symptoms among youth seems to be increasing. Depression among youth is associated with poorer academic performance and social relationships. Preventive interventions for youth with elevated depressive symptoms are essential. The STARr training was found to reduce depressive symptoms in youth; however, it was too linguistic and could be enhanced in terms of gender and cultural background. This study will examine whether a simplified, adapted modular CBT training (STARr 2.0) is effective in reducing depressive symptoms and co-occurring anxiety symptoms among youth with depressive symptoms. Further, this study will assess whether the module sequence preferences of adolescents, trainers, or data predict the outcome depressive symptoms. Additionally, alliance, motivation, and expectation of the treatment will be assessed as predictors. Last, we will examine moderators (age, gender) and change mechanisms (problem solving, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and stress). Methods An n-of-1 study with a single-case observational design with a baseline and effect phase will be employed. The baseline phase starts three weeks before the training. We aim to include 30 adolescents between 12 and 20 years at two mental health organizations. All participants receive the adapted STARr-training in groups of six to eight participants. The training consists of 12 hourly sessions provided by a trained trainer. Participants receive in total three short questionnaires per week and six longer questionnaires (start baseline, before the start of the training, and after each module). The primary outcome is depressive symptoms and secondary outcomes are anxiety, stress, satisfaction with the training, and individual and societal functioning. Discussion The findings of this study will provide insight into whether an adapted simplified version of the STARr training is effective in reducing depressive symptoms and will also provide insight into change mechanisms and potential subgroup differences.
