Zelfkennis en reflectieve vaardigheden zijn belangrijke eigenschappen om te ontwikkelen als journalist in opleiding. Ze dragen bij aan je professionele identiteit en aan jouw ethisch kompas. Als je op dat ethisch kompas leert vertrouwen, ook als je onder druk staat, maak je betere keuzes. Zowel in je journalistieke afwegingen als in het belang van je mentale welzijn. Het gereedschap van de journalist in immers zijn eigen wezen. Je bent je eigen instrument, een klankkast met een eigen kleur en resonantie. Die kleuring moet je wel een beetje kennen om goed verslag te kunnen doen van de wereld om je heen. Het is jouw normen en waarden patroon waar alle informatie aan wordt getoetst. Bewust en onbewust. Hoe beter jij je eigen referentiekader kent, hoe beter je die onontkoombare subjectiviteit kunt objectiveren.

Betrokken journalistiek voldoet aan een oerbehoefte van journalisten, gericht op verbondenheid met hun publiek en empathie met hun onderwerp. Anders dan eerdere vormen van 'engagement' en actiejournalistiek, zoals die in de jaren zestig en zeventig, benadrukt betrokken journalistiek dat onafhankelijkheid belangrijk is. Het hoofdstuk bespreekt de geschiedenis van betrokken journalistiek, waaronder het proefschrift van Taco Rijssemus, dat betrokken journalistiek een theoretisch fundament gaf. Hij betoogde dat betrokken journalistiek, die staat voor waardenbetrokkenheid, even professioneel en objectief kan zijn als de zogenaamd objectieve school. De menselijke waarneming is namelijk niet waardenvrij en bevat altijd een subjectief element.Betrokken journalistiek versterkt het vak als geheel door vanuit een eigen gezichtspunt professionele maatstaven te hanteren. Het herinnert eraan dat journalistiek een vak met een missie is en blijft.

This article provides a detailed case study of “journalistic theater,” focusing on Teatro di Nascosto, an Italy-based international group creating public events in the Middle East and Europe. Employing a reconstruction method, the study explores the production process of The Catwalk (2018, 2019), a series of performances on people’s daily lives and emotional responses to current affairs in conflict zones. The article offers 3 main perspectives on news work at the intersection of journalism and performance arts. First, live experience performance can enhance news work with artist-journalists engaging in intimate relationships for which they “dissolve” in a real-life situation. Second, empathy-driven news work succors performers and audiences with a sense of hope for recovery and healing, drawn from communal experiences, and advancing journalism’s “emotional turn” with a compassionate orientation. Third, journalistic theater’s physicality extends news work with the stage as a platform and warrants a perspective of embodied journalism, spotlighting the human body as a medium.

Rond 1900 was Abraham Kuyper een dominante figuur in politiek en samenleving. We kennen hem als oprichter en Kamerlid van de ARP, en ook als stichter van een Amsterdamse universiteit en van de Gereformeerde Kerken. Uiteindelijk werd hij premier van alle Nederlanders. Als een staatsman werd hij ontvangen door koningen en keizers. Maar één ding was hij nagenoeg zijn leven lang: meer dan een halve eeuw werkte hij als journalist. Dagelijks schreef hij voor zijn dagblad en zijn weekblad in totaal meer dan 10.000 artikelen en 17.000 ‘driestarren’. Geducht en gevreesd bij vriend en vijand, bewonderd door de aanhang die hijzelf met zijn journalistiek had geschapen. Dit materiaal, dat sinds zijn dood vrijwel is vergeten en nooit eerder werd onthuld, vormt het hart van deze biografie.

Communication that fosters collective action is considered a key driver of transformational change. This study explores the role that cooperatives could play in transforming the current unsustainable food system toward sustainability. The focal point of the study is how communication processes of nonprofit cooperative forms of collective action can optimize their transformative capacity and, in a wider context, contribute to agricultural transformation. The study addresses former research on transformation, in particular on how transformation is triggered at local level. To assess how transformation can be stimulated in practice, the case of a new food cooperative – Farming Communities, a grassroots initiative in the south of the Netherlands – is investigated. Farming Communities serves as an example of an innovative form of food production and illustrates how collective action and connective action come about through interaction. Collective action, depending on the quality and the results of interaction, is fostered by acknowledged vertical and horizontal interdependence and a certain level of trust. Interaction dynamics for collective action can enhance transformative capacity by emergent new ways of doing, knowing, framing, and organizing. Furthermore, the concept of connective action is introduced, which entails interaction dynamics among individuals who share ideas and opinions via networked technologies. Connective action can overcome the fragility of a single local initiative and is suitable for enhancing the transformative capacity of a grassroots initiative. However, a surplus of connection action could hamper the robustness of collective action. Cooperatives are therefore challenged to find a fruitful balance between collective action and connective action.

Purpose:The study aims to explain the communicative basis of conflicts in which actors stand in opposition in defining a negotiated situation and to deepen knowledge of environmental conflict development, in particular on how frames are (re)shaped through discursive choices in interaction.Design/methodology/approach:This study adopts an interactional approach to framing and 1) identifies the frames shaped and reshaped in four environmental debates and 2) analyzes how framing activities affect the course of the debates.Findings:This study contributes to understanding 1) the interactive nature of conflicts; 2) how the reception and interpretation of issue framing depends on the surrounding identity and characterization framing and 3) how framing activities, like identity work, emotional alignment and reframing, can affect the course of environmental debates toward polarizing or bridging.Research limitations/implications:On a methodological level, this study contributes to communication research by applying methodologies for investigating framing processes on a micro-level. This study investigates interactional framing, considering the perspectives of frame strategists engaging in issue arenas. The study provides an in-depth discourse analysis of the debates but lacks an overview on the entire issue arena regarding this conflict.Practical implications:Skilled actors span boundaries by articulating issue frames that accommodate opponents' concerns and values while demonstrating the added value of the new frame, adjusting identity work in favor of relations with opponents. Furthermore, calibrating emotional intensity offers opportunities to mobilize support.Originality/value:This research investigates which communicative competences are essential to act adequately in environmental conflicts, given their intractable nature, and suggests opportunities for cocreation by making discursive choices. This approach helps to uncover the micro-processes that escalate and de-escalate a conflict.
