Learning Professional Knowledge: Bachelor Nursing Students’ Experiences in Learning and Knowledge Quality Outcomes in a Competence-Based Curriculum
Since decades, nursing education struggles with a persistent gap between the theoretical knowledge offered in the study program and its application in professional practice. To bridge this gap competence-based curricula were developed with instructional designs as authentic learning contexts and self-directed learning. In this project we explored final year Bachelor Nursing (BN) students’ experiences in learning in a newly developed curriculum, and their knowledge quality outcomes and the degree of agreement with knowledge requirements. An instrumental multiple case study was conducted with interviews, concept mapping and a domain knowledge list. Results show that a third of the participants had positive learning experiences and got high appraisals for their knowledge quality. Similar to the medium and low scoring participants, they developed instrumental knowledge but integrated other forms of learning into a system of meaning, which is needed to solve non-routine problems in future practice. Medium and low scoring participants did not profit from learning in authentic contexts and selfdirected learning. In conclusion, developing sufficient professional knowledge in a constructivist competence-based curriculum is influenced by students’ intrinsic motivation to build a strong knowledge base, by their perception of how to learn and use professional knowledge, and their expectations of the degree of supervision and guidance by the teacher. It is recommended to evaluate the extent to which the intended curriculum is being taught.

In the last decade, the number of living labs focusing on environmental sustainability has risen in order to cope with the need for environmentally sustainable innovation. Although these multi-actor approaches allow for innovation, this alone does not suffice a society’s transition to becoming environmentally sustainable. Organizations should focus on innovation internally as well, but in practice, this lacks often because environmentally sustainable values are not integrated into the organizational policy. Living labs could influence the organization’s policy regarding environmental sustainability. Qualitative findings based on eight interviews, observations, and additional relevant documents from a living lab gave insights into this process. Overall, this study found that organizations take part in living labs for several reasons. First, firms wish to stabilize their business model in the long-term and lower risk on future claims. Second, the living lab’s aim for collaboration in order to implement environmentally sustainable approaches in the supply chain attracts firms. Finally, firms expect to gain business and market demand in the living labs. Additionally, the embeddedness and proximity of firms in the living lab makes participating in the living lab more attractive when firms consider joining a living lab based on the previously mentioned reasons. Once participating in the living lab, team dynamics, and knowledge sharing practices change firm representatives’ perceptions regarding their attitudes towards environmental sustainability and the feasibility to implement environmentally sustainable practices. This change in perception is translated to the firm of the participant, where firms’ policies are adjusted. Based on this research, implications for organizations, governmental policymakers, and living lab facilitators are provided as well as suggestions for future research.

This article addresses the question of the role of theology and theologians in a secular environment, such as a university. Due to social changes theology is no longer the self-evident ‘Queen of the Sciences’, but is challenged to review its position among sciences, which often look with suspicion at its purposes. Instead of calling to reclaim the throne, and drawing on the historical figure of the Fool, it is argued that theology (or, rather theologians) should redress themselves as ‘Clowns of the Sciences’. By way of a conversation with the propositions of James McClendon and Stanley Hauerwas, a comic framework is set out that makes fun of the Queen, and thereby allows theology to participate by its oddity. Towards the end, and with the assistance of the prophet Jonah, a preliminary outline is made of the Clown’s Speech.
